Tzintzuntzan Ruins

We spent the day at the very interesting Tzintzuntzan ruins in Tzintzuntzan (place of the hummingbirds" in the native Purépecha language). This large site "functioned as a ceremonial center, from which political, military, and religious power was exerted" during prehispanic times according to the explanatory sign, which was in Spanish, Purépecha (I think), and English. The main platform, about 400 meters long, held five buildings, commonly known as Yácatas, used as bases for temples. These buildings were of mixed plan (rectangular and circular) as seen here and originally contained stairways. I was fortunate to have great cloud formations that complemented this architectural wonder.
