Just because we can?

It's been so hot today; I was grateful to be asked to help out in the air-conditioned ICU this afternoon. I also need to gather US$ 250 for my trip to India, at the end of March, so this was a welcome start!  
There is no doubt that Western medicine has achieved remarkable things; were it not for recent developments in orthopaedic care my C would have had her arm amputated. Yet, more and more it feels like patients are treated just because we know how, without much thought given to how the intervention, will benefit the individual. Now medicine, is often just another money-making industry I think this is getting worse.
