TIDAL WEIR

The 'Tidal Weir' was build at Glasgow Green in 1901. It's not really a weir, but an underflow tidal sluice, intended to stabilise the bank upstream of the highest tidal point of the river. Its three sluice gates are electrically powered and can move up or down within the sandstone abutments, maintaining a deep, even flow through Glasgow Green and separating salt water from fresh. Ponder that next time you are frolicking carelessly about the Green.
