War Bunker
As I am currently holidaying in Jersey, it is inevitable that I was going to have some contact with the occupation legacy. Today, unexpectedly, at a prehistoric monument called Hougue Brie I encountered a small German bunker. It had an exhibition in it about the conditions the slave labour endured whilst being forced to construct things such as this. I used the term encountered deliberately because that was how it felt. It beggars belief the cruelty and inhumanity that was meted out. I felt tainted and close to tears and was glad to leave. Although I was aware of the occupation, as most of us are, I certainly have a more visceral understanding of it now.
