The wind was whistling and the windows rattling as the dark storm clouds scudded past, hiding the distant hills, when I happened to glance out of the window.  In a clearing there were the most beautiful colours of pink, lilac, blue, green, yellow and orange.  The dark clouds came and went but still the beautiful swirling clouds remained.   My blip was already done but this was a more memorable and rare sight so I grabbed my camera although I had missed the best view and this photo does not do it justice.
I think they are probably nacreous clouds (sometimes called mother of pearl clouds) and as polar stratospheric clouds usually seen only in latitudes above 50 degrees.  As they are about 15 to 30 km (10 to 20 miles) high up in the atmosphere they are lit up by the sun and so visible for a couple of hours after sunset or before dawn.  They look very pretty but are harmful as they are made of ice crystals and nitric acid which assists the production of chlorine atoms which actually deplete the ozone layer so they have a dangerous effect on the environment.
With a clear sky it must have been a glorious sight but unfortunately half an hour later the sky (extra) was covered and so hiding the colourful clouds.
