Fortified bridge

Warkworth is is a classical defensive site. The Castle (in the distance) commands the neck of a meander which almost encircles the town. The only way across the river from the north, from where the Scots would come, was via this bridge. It was fortified with this gatehouse. Only Monmouth also has a fortified bridge. Until the early sixties it was the only bridge. No double deckers allowed!
