St Albans pilgrimage badge
Every month the medieval Benedictine monks of St Albans take modern day pilgrims through the candle lit corridors of the cathedral. We were lucky enough to be part of the party visiting yesterday. We met the abbot, lady Gloucester and several of the monks who explained what life was like in the Middle Ages (very good it seems - they brewed their own beer). The highlight though would have to be visiting the crypt with Albans remains. Gifts would be presented by those wishing for miracles or divine help and advice. A watching tower allowed 'volunteers' from the town to keep an eye on these valuables.
Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take photos inside but we were given a pilgrim badge to remember the experience.
