Cattle trucked...
Another Port Appin scene based around the harbour.
I've just watched - for the umptidozenth time - Ealing Studios, 'The Maggie'. It gave me the idea of a dark night and a cattle lorry (they were never called trucks in the 50's - railways had trucks). The cargo boat has arrived early, the cattle mooch around the pier, the cattle wagon eventually arrives...
If you haven't seen The Maggie and love the thought of seeing Glasgow, the islands and the West Coast of Scotland in the 50's then you'll love this. The two Puffer boats used in the film were Hay's vessels Inca and Boer and much of the film was shot on Islay with a goodly sequence of the Crinan Canal.
PUFFERS....
The Clyde puffer is essentially a type of small steamboat which provided a vital supply link around the west coast and Hebrides islands of Scotland, stumpy little cargo ships that have achieved almost mythical status thanks largely to the short stories Neil Munro wrote about the Vital Spark and her captain Para Handy.
There's a model kit of a Puffer but at £90 it's way down the list of things to buy. Food and ale are closer to the top!
