U-Bahn München: 68/100 Oberwiesenfeld

Munich underground: 68/100 Oberwiesenfeld

Oberwiesenfeld underground station is a rather new addition to Munich's undergrund network. Opened in October 2007 as a north-western extension to the orange Olympic line U3, the station serves the northern Olympic Park, the Olympic Village, and the companies along Moosacher Straße. Oberwiesenfeld is also the original name of the area, which is now mostly occupied by the Olympic Park and Olympic Village. The pillar-less station has 16 large skylights (kind of like the stations at Messestadt West or Gern).

The Oberwiesenfeld had quite the chequered history: the badlands north of Munich were used as artillery training ground from the end of the 18th century. By the end of the 19th century, the area was additionally used as landing site for hot-air balloons and airships, before a landing strip was built in 1925 and Oberwiesenfeld became Munich's first real airport. After the airport was relocated to Riem in 1939, the Luftwaffe moved in until the end of WWII in 1945, when the US Army occupied the airfield until 1957. Parts of the Oberwiesenfeld were eventually transformed into the Olypmic Park for the 1972 Summer Olympics.
