Snowdrops...
...in Ilderton churchyard.
Undeterred by the forecast for heavy rain and high winds, we packed a flask, put on our walking boots and set off for Ilderton, with the intention of walking up to Threestoneburn Wood. MrM was particularly keen to get there in the hope of spotting a red squirrel or two.
It rained but, thankfully, not very heavily. The wind, however, was absolutely wild, necessitating a change of plan and a much shorter (about 3 miles), low-level walk. Again, we passed lots of trees blown down during recent gales - very sad to see so many great oaks and beech trees on their sides, uprooted. Good to be out - but, on this occasion, very good to get back to the car, hot coffee and chocolate!
Stopped in Ilderton village on the way back and, as we walked around the churchyard, the sun made a brief appearance. The churchyard - surrounded by the most beautiful countryside - seemed a very tranquil place, despite the atrocious weather.
