Blipfoto Dickens Challenge 2016

Nothing much to report for today.  The weather has been nasty - cold and rainy.  So I have stayed indoors.  Had a real lazy day.  Not seen or spoken to anyone.  Lots of TV viewing.  Did some pork loin for my tea which I had with roast potatoes and veg.  Very nice.

Another entry for the Dickens Challenge today.  Based on a quote from Oliver Twist

“There are a good many books, are there not, my boy?” said Mr. Brownlow, observing the curiosity with which Oliver surveyed the shelves that reached from the floor to the ceiling.

“A great number, sir,” replied Oliver; “I never saw so many.”

“You shall read them if you behave well,” said the old gentleman kindly; “and you will like that, better than looking at the outsides, - that is, in some cases, because there are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts. " 


The book in my blip shot was published in 1903 - after Charles Dickens time. Such a lovely cover and spine. However the author G A Henty was a contemporary of Dickens as he was born in 1832 and died in 1902. Henty wrote 122 works of historical fiction  - 16 of his books were published after his death.  The title of this book always reminds me of Lance Corporal Jones in the TV series Dad's Army and his tales of the battle of Omdurman serving under Kitchener and facing the Fuzzy Wuzzies.  They don't like it up 'em!".

Written in the front of the book are the words " Christmas 1916.  From Dad."  So a war time Christmas present for someone.  Hope they enjoyed it.
