Another box ticked
So I was admitted back into the Nuffield this morning to have surgery to remove the 'port-a-cath'. As it's easier to remove, I was able have it under local anaesthetic and it went well. The injection was a little painful as he put quite a lot in, but then all I could feel was a bit of pulling and pushing to get it out. Mr Brooks, the surgeon said that in some cases they come straight out and in others, they build up a bit of a cocoon around them and that was the case for me. This meant having to cut it out slightly, but he said it also meant that despite all the chemo, my body had healed very well.
Twenty minutes later and he was stitching me back up and said that he'd gone in via the scar from when I had the port inserted, but he'd cut that scar tissue away as it would heal better without it. There's something rather interesting about having surgery by local anaesthetic and being able to talk to the surgeon as he's working. He was a comical chap who suggested that his assistants might want to draw eyes on the gauze patches they'd put over my eyes – I said they could also draw new eyebrows and eyelashes at the same time lol!
He gave me the port as a souvenir (I've put a photo in my extras if you're interested) and I was pushed back to my room in a wheelchair. I had a full English breakfast and I felt fine, so I was allowed home at lunch time. As the anaesthetic has started to wear off though, it feels a bit sore which isn't surprising and tomorrow I'm sure it'll feel bruised but I'm a tough cookie and it's another box ticked on my road to recovery. So it's now time to rest and recoup.
Other than the photo of my port I hadn't taken anything very exciting today, so when I noticed the sun starting to set, I went upstairs and took this shot out of the back bedroom window.
