What folly!

Following on from the history lesson here we were reminded of another Thomas Tresham building.  When Thomas was released from prison in 1593 after serving 15 years for refusing to become Protestant he began work on this folly.  The Holy Trinity is represented by the number 3 all through the building.
3 walls; 33 ft long;  3 gables topped with a 3 sided obelisk, a 3 sided chimney, 3 floors, 3 windows on each floor, 3 Latin texts each with 33 letters.  Some windows  are shaped as a trefoil (the Tresham family crest) each with a triangle in the centre.  Another row are larger trefoil windows and another has  cross shaped window surrounded by 3 smaller windows at each point of the cross.  There are many more examples in numbers and texts and shapes.  Over the entrance on the ground floor is another inscription "Tresham bears Witness".  He certainly did!
