A home at the end of the World

OMG - I am speechless, even after having kissed the Blarney stone only a few days ago! What can I say but a very big and very warm thank you to you all who swung by and left such lovely comments, stars and hearts on my blipday. It really is very much appreciated and I will get round to thank you - slowly!

A most enjoyable night at Finola's talk on Game of Stones. She had done a huge amount of work, knew her stuff intimately yet is such an easy and effortless speaker, and  combined with some great photos made for a very informative evening.

After all the foul weather today was delightful! Warm, sunny and springlike - time to get out and explore. I had two very obscure and as yet unfound wells on my mind, but we did have grid references put into Himself's GPS. First stop, I rather brazenly knocked on the door to fix a time to see the first well but Timmy very kindly offered to take us there on the spot. The most amazing scenery, he led us down through rolling pasture towards the sea, a stick in hand to fend off any frisky cattlle. The well was tucked into a wall metres deep with briars and Timmy hacked away at them until I could dangle over and attempt to get a photo. He said only one other person had ever been in his living memory but thought it was once known for healing eyes. The well has a rather intriguing name toberknocknapooka - well of the fairy hill. Not a hill in sight, nor any fairies!

Second well was right down the end of the sheep's Head. what a drive down and not a soul around. I had the location on an 1842 map and Himself was armed with co-ordinates and there it was, a tiny stone box with incredible clear and cold water, tucked into the  hillside. This one was called Tobarnadunaree, and means well of the soldiers- possibly a reference to the nearby signal tower. Another extraordinary setting - just a little way from this group of houses - the last until America!  Note the sheep lounging in the sunshine.

We then decided to climb up to inspect the signal tower - a muddy scramble and then you're on the spine of the peninsula with magnificent  360 views.  The extra show Himself storming up towards the trig point followed by a ghostly shadow! A very satisfactory afternoon.

I'm out again tonight - book club, so will have a proper catch up later.
