The Salmon of Knowledge

This sculpture of bradán feasa or the Salmon of Knowledge resides outside the main entrance at the Institute of Technology, Sligo. It was designed by local artist, Brian Halpin and is made of copper and steel.
Legend has it that an ordinary salmon ate 9 hazelnuts that fell into the well of wisdom and in so doing gained the world's knowledge. The first person to eat the flesh of the salmon would in turn gain this knowledge. That person turned out to be Fionn mac Cumhaill.
