Repair Man
Couple of months ago I got the dreaded error 99 on my 5D. I wasn't able to get it go away, so I really started have the fear in me.
One month ago I took the camera to this guy. He checked what was wrong with it and told me that the whole mirror assembly had failed. The part itself would set me back almost 300 euros. Adding the repair fee to that would bring the total to 550 euros.
I don't know exactly why, but I told him to go ahead with it. After all, it doesn't make whole lot of sense to put that kind of buck into a camera that isn't worth more than six-hundred. Somehow I just couldn't throw away a camera that had a working 35mm sensor inside it.
With the new mirror assembly installed, and having just over 32,000 actuations on it, I'm looking forward using my 5D for another two years before I'm forced to upgrade. Perhaps I'm going for a pre-used medium format system then, who knows...
