All In The Family...
...mother, daughter, and granddaughter.
These boxes were made out of a single block just like the one at the bottom of the tier -- except for the contrasting lids, obviously. They don't quite fit inside each other, partly because they aren't symmetrical in plan view, and because the insides are narrower at the bottom than the top -- there's a reason for that, but it's far too complicated to try to explain. My previous blip of the granddaughter box will give you an idea of the scale.
I painted the insides using milk paint (see extra), something I've only just learned about -- it was suggested in the Fine Woodworking article explaining how to make these boxes. Here's an excerpt from the manufacturer's website:
Our Old Fashioned MILK PAINT is a re-creation of the ancient MILK PAINT formula used for centuries before the sale of commercially made paints. It is an authentic finish for use in the restoration of antiques or in the reproduction of antique furniture. It comes in rich colors that are durable and do not fade. Also, since our real MILK PAINT is made from elements that pre-date the use of petrochemicals and other toxic bases and solvents, it is biodegradable, non-toxic, and odor-free when dry. Our MILK PAINT is preferred by custom furniture builders, interior designers, artists, craftsmen, do-it-yourselfers, and those who are sensitive to the need to protect the environment.
One of the many features I like is that it comes in powder form with a long shelf life. You just mix equal volumes of the powder with water when you need it.
I'm sure Cynthia's favorite will be the granddaughter!
