If you like sailing and you have money to burn, the Panerai classic yacht regatta in Cowes is a dangerous place to be. The ruinous potential of an old wooden yacht is something on a par with that house in New Orleans called the Rising Sun.

This afternoon I was invited on board Eilean, a yacht designed by William Fife, the celebrated Scottish naval architect, and launched in 1936. It was restored just over a year ago for the Italian based Panerai watch company. This was the yacht featured by Duran Duran in its 1980s song, Rio. It didn't go out today. "Too windy," said the skipper. Much nicer to sip champagne by the pontoon instead and grab this blip.
