Half Mast
Antonin Scalia ascended to the Supreme Court several years before I entered law school. I vividly remember studying his opinions and trying to understand and accept them - usually to little avail. Years later I met him at a lecture and recall his acerbic demeanor, playfully couched in the guise of "most of you morons could never grasp the depth of the law like I do, so your utter ignorance is okay." While I admire his achievements and service on the bench, I will never admire what I saw as an intellectual elitist mentality having nothing to do with the law or the Constitution. Bombastic snobbery at its best.
Flags are flying at half mast across the country to honor his service in the position. Now our Congress will fight like babies over a toy to see whether an appointment will be made during the next 12 months. It's a shame, really - and certainly no honor to the citizens, or to the strict Constitutionalist mind of Justice Scalia.
