Hoverfly

Melangyna novaezelandiae, the larger of New Zealand’s two endemic hoverflies. It is about 10mm long, while the other is half that. This hoverfly is not as colourful as many I see on Blipfoto, but it has a yellow tongue, and its scutellum (at the waist) resembles a gold pincushion. The flower is sow thistle.
