Clachtoll.....
......the new kid on the block (of stone). Clachtool has three stunning white sand beaches and emerald clear water. The beaches come from the local bedrock of Torridonian Sandstone. At 500 million years old, it's pretty young rock for these parts, most of Assynt is made up of Lewisian Gneiss which is 3000-5000 million years old.
Another good day out, starting with Lochinver Larder pies (probably the best pies in the world), then a brisk hike around Clachtoll, a play on the beach, a walk around the cemetery*; a lot of young men killed at sea, home for tea and then camping in the back garden. for the boys.
.....and the weather was lovely too.
* we're cemetery tourists wherever we go in the world. It gives you a good sense of the local family surnames, and asks some interesting social questions too, e.g. the number of baby headstones in St Kilda was shocking, turns out infant mortality was 80% in the latter half of the 19th century. Google the reason why.
