Between Two Continents
Today we did a great many things. The main image is the main thing that make Iceland so very interesting; The mid atlantic ridge. Here you see onthe right the North American plate, and on the left the Eurasian plate, we were in between.
Other things we did today:
Saw the site of the world's oldest parliament at Thingvellir.
Sampled bread still hot from being dug out of the ground at Laugarvatn Fontana. Here we also saw geothermal pudles boiling at the edge of a lake. In some (rather small) places the lake itself was boiling while most of it was frozen over.
Went to Geysir and saw the Strokkur geyser shooting about 20m into the air on an irregular basis, as well a several others more sedately bubbling away.
Finally we visited the spectacular, partially frozen warterfall Gullfos.
In the evening Steph and I went out into Flúðir, where we bought some very nice pizza from a trailer run by a local family.
After our rather large meal, we went out to see if we could see the northern lights just outside the hotel. Unfortunately light from nearby greenhouses made for quite a lot of light pollution but we still managed to see one faint bow of aurora in the sky. I even managed to get one hazy picture, so I can now say I have successfully photographed the northen lights.
