Piano Recital

My kids' annual piano recital went really well. I am now forced to bargain with my son to keep playing. This time I promised him a small break in the lesson schedule this summer IF he would knock his teacher's socks off. He did.

Thing is, he isn't really excited to play, but he is a natural at it. His teacher had him play his warm up music so all her other students could hear how it should really sound. He has a great ear and can pick up songs effortlessly. I think that's why he begs me to quit piano, either he is bored or hates to practice.

Then there is my daughter. She is not a natural but will practice for as long as it takes to get the song just right. She is inherently a pleaser, and will do everything in her power to impress her teacher, parents, and big brother. She does not want to quit. In fact, she says she is having fun.

When it comes to piano, I just don't want my kids to give it up until much later in life. It stimulates the brain. There are studies out there that show a direct correlation to music and increased mathematical skills. They could possibly use this skill to earn money playing at parties when they are in their teens and can't find other work. Goodness knows I won't be filling up their gas tank! And I am pretty sure that when they get to adulthood, they will be grateful I didn't let them quit.
