The Falkirk Wheel
This remarkable feat of canal engineering was our sole visit on the journey home from Edinburgh. It is explained here.
As if negotiating our way out of the City were not difficult enough, with a plethora of junctions forbidding both left and right turns, finding the actual wheel in Falkirk was made even more challenging by the Scottish sense of humour. Big signs on the motorways tell you which junctions to ignore, but none tell you which one to take. Of course, my disdain for sat nav added to the fun. And, when we got there, having paid £2 to use an almost deserted car park, we found the visitor centre closed and we didn't get to see the wheel in action.
An extra shot has some colour - not that there was much to be seen on a very grey day.
