Every year, when the ponds fill with amorous frogs, our garden is visited by predatory herons. This year we have had two regular visitors, who often sit in the tops of the conifers, sizing up the situation before drifting down onto the lawn and stalking up to the water margin. I was photographing this one in the morning sun, and just managed to catch its surprise before it was ousted by another heron. My immediate thought was that it looked rather like a flamboyant opera singer! Pete and Alex have now erected some rather fierce looking cane stockades round the ponds, which hopefully will prevent the herons from killing all our amphibians.
