Colour

He had grown up with the pictures as small reproductions in books and, when he finally got to see them properly, he was surprised by the scale of the originals.

His books were old, cheap editions which saved up their colours to be spent on a miserly few plates collected together in the middle pages. The colours of the paintings in the gallery seemed an unnecessary, gaudy extravagance.
