Train to Somewhere

Reading a piece on the work of August Sandar’ survey on Weimar society and the similarities with the way technology is now being used to observe all parts of current society, I watched.

Faces, hundreds of them with mundane expressions, no smiles, just people lost in their thoughts or lack of. Dozens fixed with Costa or Nero cups in hands. Heads tilted with eyes, hollow, fixed on screens consuming information without purpose. Announcements from tannoys “due to today’s weather, surfaces may be slippery” “the train at Platform 17 is the 08:01 service to Dundee calling at…………” Advertising screens urging people to visit England Rugby’s website and join a rugby club, featuring devils incarnate from the Auld Enemy. “Luggage left unattended may be destroyed”.

Mundaneness, juxtaposed by Big Brother watching. Poor coffee and hollow eyes. Fear of terrorist bombs or slipping on a wet surface. Cameras high in the roof recording faces and movements. Constant analysis by algorithms looking for anomalous deviant behaviour.

“Morning” came a voice from a smiling face. It was the nice lady who has a Brompton just like mine.
