Quake City

It would be impossible to visit Christchurch without admiring the fortitude and determination of its inhabitants to look to the future. The city is still in the process of being rebuilt and what a wonderful modern city it will be (that still respects its history) when it is eventually completed. We visited the destruction of the Cathedral and the forward thinking modern "cardboard Cathedral". The 186 white chairs of all shapes and sizes nearby were a poignant reminder of the earthquake. (We will put pictures on our Flickr page soon). We took the tram to the Botanical gardens, and could have spent all day there. We visited the shopping area that is gradually being rebuilt, and couldn't help being impressed by the ingenious use of hundreds of shipping containers used as modern temporary shops. Everywhere the people are so polite and welcoming! Moving on tomorrow.
