Painted ladies

This was taken from the coach window. We noticed a lot of cows had their horns painted, some even had both different colours! We also saw a few yellow cows!
The reason is the Sankranthi or Pongol. This is a 4 day celebration rather like our Harvest festival which occurs in the middle of January thanking the gods for the rice harvest. The cows are all washed and some are then bathed in turmeric water which stains their coats yellow. The horns are then painted bright colours. Amazing!
