Detail inside The Chellington Centre

This was the former 12th century Church of St Nicholas, Chellington.  It was declared redundant in the early 1970’s and the then Social Responsibility Office in the Diocese proposed that it be given over to be used by young people where they could stay for short periods and enjoy life as a community. This it did but struggled and faced closure in the 1990’s. The building was handed over to a local group charged with breathing new life into the project. £1.2 million was raised for complete refurbishment. This weekend the centre is given over to an Art, Craft and Photography exhibition. The proceeds from the weekend go towards the running costs.

Today’s blip is the medieval front and wall feature housing an ancient bible and prayer book. The extra is the view from Chellington Centre looking over Harrold Country Park and beyond.  The water in the foreground is the River Great Ouse. The next two pieces of water are Kingfisher Water and Grebe Lake – these both being formed as a result of sand and gravel extraction. Bedfordshire County Council bought the land from the quarry company in the early 1980’s and have developed it into the Country Park and Nature Reserve it is today.
