Jungle Jumble
This jumble sale for refugees stuck in the 'Jungle' camp in Calais was organised before the French authorities tried to demolish it. However I am sure there will still be ways to use the proceeds.
The odious weather put some punters off coming but it was still a worthwhile event especially as the Syrian families who have come to Cambridge already could come and gather up items of clothing and homeware if they needed them. They were very grateful to be able to choose from the donated items and the kids of the families were excited about all the toys which may go some way to make up for the sheer volume of stuff that they would have been compelled to leave behind.
What thoughts must go through your mind as a non-English speaking recent arrival in a very small obvious group, being shown around knowing that you are being offered things for free to get you equipped for life in a sparsely furnished house in the British winter. How much pride would you have to put on the shelf and just accept the charity? Probably masses if the thought of a Brit in a similar situation is in any way comparable. It is so humbling to remember how fortunate it is to have had a comfortable and safe upbringing and life to date.
