Dine and smell the flowers

The custom of placing flowers in the centre of the table began in the 19th century but by the early 20th, large candelabra placed at the centre and surrounded by so many flowers that the table was swamped was common practice. The Edwardians simplified things - a bowl of fruit, low and simple flower arrangements in cut glass, and streamlined accoutrement.
