Hay bale garden Phase 2
My vegetable garden project this summer is a hay bale garden.
After 3 weeks of "cooking and composting" following instructions from a website that I found, the hay bales were at the right temperature for planting and our weather here is warm..highs in the 70's (21C) and lows in the mid 40's (4C or so). I now have 3 cucumber plants, a red bell pepper plant and 4 tomato plants, 2 being the heirloom Purple Cherokee that I was lucky to find at our nearby garden center. The other 2 tomato plants are a Better Boy (supposedly a good slicing tomato for those tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches we love) and a hybrid called a bush tomato..which possibly will not climb all over the place and stay as a bush.
We have the area fence in loosely to keep the deer out so I only have to worry about possible bugs eating my plants.
I hope my black thumb does not show up. This experiment is much better than have to plant in the dirt and deal with weeds and such. I tried container tomatoes a few years ago and they did not do well..got black spots on the bottoms before they got ripe.
At least I will have some blips in the future..successes or failures!
