Opening screening

In the evening I went with my FSD friends to see the opening screening of Tampere Film Festival. Six short films were presented:

1. Hate speech
Teemu Nikki | Finland 2015 | Fiction | 1 min
A public service announcement born of being pissed off.

2. Safina
Tony Clark | United Kingdom 2013 | Fiction | 8 min
‘Safina’ centres on a 16 year old Gambian girl escaping her traffickers. She has to prove she is a child to UK authorities who decide whether to grant her full protection or not.

3. La piscina
Bruno Bozzetto | Italy 1976 | Animation | 6 min
Building a private swimming pool and facing all the little misadventures that this can cause.

4. Listen
Hamy Ramezan, Rungano Nyoni | Finland, Denmark 2014 | Fiction | 13 min
A foreign woman in a burqa brings her young son to a Copenhagen police station to file a complaint against her abusive husband, but the translator assigned to her seems unwilling to convey the true meaning of her words. A tense, diamond-hard film about cultural isolation and bureaucratic ignorance.

5. Il capo
Yuri Ancarani, Franco Barattini | Italy 2010 | Fiction | 15 min
Monte Bettogli, Carrara: in the marble quarries men and machines dig the mountain. “Il Capo” (The Chief) manages, coordinates and guides quarrymen and heavy-duty machines using a language consisting solely of gestures and signs. Conducting his dangerous and sublime orchestra against the backdrop of the sheerslopes and peaks of the Apuane Alps, the Chief works in total noise, which create a paradoxical silence.

6. Crystal Lake
Jennifer Reeder | United States 2016 | Fiction | 20 min
Crystal Lake is about a group of young girls who take over a skate park, forming an all-female force field on the half pipe. There on the reclaimed ramp, with no boys around, they are thriving and visible. This is an anthem for young feminists, which presents female friendship as a means to survive adolescence. Every grrrl-shaped breath is a battle cry.
