Laujar de Andarax
Out and About in Almeria No 3.
Another excursion organised by the Ladies Association of Almerimar. We left Almerimar in glorious sunshine and it lasted the whole day.
Fifty Five ladies made the trip, to the village of Laujar de Andarax which is located behind our mountains (Sierra Gador) and in front of the Sierra Nevada. The area is called Los Alpujarras, with white villages, remote cortijos growing Almonds, Olives, and of course Grapes, which was the main purpose of our visit!
We first stopped off in Laujar itself and went to the Town Hall where we met our guide for the day. Around the village stopping off at various points of interest, Iglesia de la Encarnacion with it's very ornate altar, the various fountains in the town (see extra).
Then onto the Bodega in Fondon (extra of old machinery) not where the wine was produced but only sold. A talk given by two elderly guys and wine tasting and tapas. The wine was 'Tetas de la Sacrisanta' and was very good, although a little heavy for lunchtime. Would be great with cheese and meat.
Eventually we went to another bodega, with a connection to the first where we had lunch (at 3.pm) we were all starving by this time! It was well out in the sticks down a dirt track in the middle of acres of vines (extra of the surrounding area). Lunch was home cooked - starters Raf tomatoes and olives with chunks of local bread follwoed by Kid with potatoes in sauce, followed by Rabbit Paella (Vallencian), then pork chops and finally Natillas (custard). All of course washed down with the local wine and water, and finished with Malaga sweet wine (see extra - a toast and sing song).
A lovely day and good company.
