a lifetime burning

I'm ready for my close up Mr De Mille

Is it just me, or does she look as though she's wearing lipstick? :-)

The finches that visit our feeder seem to delight in throwing a fair amount of seed on the ground below.  Fortunately we had regular visits from the local avian refuse collectors, or ground feeding birds, as they are politely known.

In addition to a group of collared doves there are several fat wood pigeons who visit us regularly.  The chaffinches, dunnocks and wag tails also get a look in, as the doves and pigeons don't seem to mind the competition.  I do however, have to keep relocating the feeder as the grass below it suffers from the bird's feet and beaks.

We've also had visits from the woodpecker over the weekend. It seems to have moved  on from the peanuts to the sunflower hearts.  As the feeder is designed for much smaller birds, the woodpecker has to hang off the bottom of the feeder and then curl around to get  its beak to project into the feeder opening.  It can't be comfortable but it seems to manage.  Needless to say, its such a nervous bird that I haven't got anywhere near managing to get a photo of it.

I was so tempted to title this "fat bird" but discretion was the better part of valour ;-)
