Manaus, Brazil
We are docked at Manaus for the next two days. This city of over two million people is about 1,000 miles up the Amazon River from the coast, and it is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Solimoes Rivers.
,
Today we took a local boat tour to see the "meeting of the waters" where the Rio Negro meets the Amazon. You can see a very clear demarcation between the two waters, with the Rio Negro looking like black coffee and the Amazon appearing like milk chocolate. We then boarded a small canoe powered by an outboard engine, and explored January Lake which has enormous water lilies, loads of birds, caimans, sloths, anacondas, bushmaster snakes, and other creatures of the Amazon jungle. These two darling little boys paddled their wooden canoe out to us, and sold us candy. The oldest boy is 8 years old, and his little brother is 5.
Well, I TRIED to upload an extra picture of the huge water lily pads, but after SIX attempts, it was either hurl the #$!@? computer overboard or go have a stiff drink.
