The adventure begins

Today has all about getting from A to B, or in our case, from Christchurch to the Sabine Hut in Nelson Lakes National Park.

We drove to the Boyle education centre in Lewis Pass where we left our car (and sadly for me, my prescription glasses too. I was wearing my prescription sunglasses so at least had something).

A shuttle from Nelson Lakes came through and picked us up. We stopped in Murchison for a last slice of civilisation  - flush loo, ice cream, sandwich etc.

Here we've just been dropped off at the end of the jetty at Lake Rotoroa, and are carrying our heavy packs down to the waiting water taxi. The distant mountains are our play ground for the next 8 days.

We met many interesting people along the way. On our first night at the Sabine hut we spent time with a german man who has spent the past 27 summers in New Zealand. He'd just retrieved his sea kayak from where he'd hidden it in bush at the edge of the lake, while he climbed mountains. Perfect :-)

Sabine Hut remains the Kingdom of the Sandfly, but I'm pleased to report the wasps weren't as bad as last year.

I can't wait for tomorrow when we're under our own steam.
