Moliceiros in Aveiro

Today a trip up the canals of Aveiro on a traditional moliceiro boat. Apart from fishing, traditional industries here included the harvesting of seaweed for fertiliser and salt manufacture. These boats were used for transporting this produce before many of them were converted for tourist use.

As well as its canals, a Averio is surrounded by miles of lagoons. sheltered from the Atlantic by isthmuses. The centre of the city has a modern and airy shopping mall one side of it's central canal with footbridges over to the old town and it's fishmarket.

In the evening, with the aid of an OpenStreetMap application on my phone, and a faltering conversation with a cafe owner, we discovered that there was a ferry from Aveiro's port across to the São Jacinto isthmus, so we took a long route back around the Aveiro lagoon to our hotel in Estarreja.
