Surveying his Kingdom
We've now finished two of the surveys we undertook and we've volunteered for a new one - Breeding Waders of English Upland Farmland.
English Upland Farmland is something we have plenty of around here - we usually call it Moorland Fringe. The main species we are looking for are Curlew, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Redshank, Snipe, although there is an extended list of species. I went up to reccy part of the area today and found that 3 of these species have already started to return to the breeding grounds. Here is one of the Curlews. I also saw Lapwing and Snipe. In the past we've had Oystercatchers but I think it's unlikely that we'll see Redshank. As well as the arrivals, there were plenty of birds in the departure lounge: Fieldfare, Redwing, and on the reservoir in the valley, 10 Whooper Swans
