Artificial Sun

Another grey, overcast, gloomy day. I took my flashgun out again. I have been playing with it quite a bit recently and am amazed at the way it behaves so differently in the various camera modes.

I have been using my Canon speedlight on ETTL (automatic) mode. If I switch the camera to full auto (perish the thought) or P modes the shots are well exposed  and bright. Come off those modes and use Av, Tv or manual and it behaves completely differently and if you switch the flash to manual it adds a whole extra dimension of bafflement! Then you can also change the angle of the head and get even more complicated.

I have also discovered that different lenses (including some Canon ones) also give different results. It would appear that some of the older ones don't transmit distance information back to the body and so the ETTL calculations give different exposures!

The leaf shot was in almost dark woods - I think I got the exposure pretty well (it is increased a fraction in processing). Also included an extra of some sheep fleece - again flash illuminated.
