Over Yonder

I Used To Live Here

This was my first flat in Edinburgh.

Moving to Scotland was daunting for an English person.  I'd heard tales of snowdrifts and cold snaps.  Consequently, my suitcase was full of thermal underwear and chunky jumpers.  Naturally, when I arrived it was a major heatwave.  Major.  I was taking three showers a day and lying naked on the kitchen floor just to recover.

Then I moved into this flat.  Opening the front door I was engulfed in a blast of cold air.  This flat was like a fridge.  Dark, damp and miserable, it's the only flat I've ever lived in with a slug problem.  Not mice - slugs. You wouldn't believe how much Saxa I got through living there.

Thank goodness for those thermals and sweaters.  I'd look out of the window at the people walking by in t-shirts while eating ice-cream and sigh.

The other thing about it was that it was on the same street where the most infamous brothel in Edinburgh was located.  Every time I would catch a taxi home, I'd get a knowing chuckle from the driver and a recounting of a tale of late-night shenanigans.

It's a nice part of town to live in, but I'm glad I'm now above-ground.
