The crooked church spire at Ermington

We were on stage 2 of Devon's Coast to Coast walk - The Two Moors Way today.  It was a grey and chilly day but the walk was relatively gentle with fine views of Dartmoor and other local hills interspersed with walks along narrow lanes lined with the first clumps of bluebells, lots of primroses and the last of the snowdrops.  We wandered along the banks of the River Erme which was in full flow.  Lunch was taken at Ermington where this shot was taken.  The 14th century church's spire is noticeably crooked.  Apparently the bend in the spire resulted from the use of unseasoned wood during construction.  In 1856 when it was struck by lightening local parishioners rejected the idea of straightening it when it was rebuilt.  The village's pub is known as The Crooked Spire.
