The Apple and the Ivy

"The holly apple and the ivy, when they are both full grown ...."

Today I hacked away at the ivy. I'd been told that the ivy will slowly kill the apple tree if we let it keep growing. The main trunk of the ivy was fatter than a fat cucumber. I even tried sawing it but that wasn't too easy as there was a holly bush in the way.
