The Gatekeeper
Took a wander through the Gorbals today. Stood more or less on the sight of my parents' old street...........an amazing transformation. Where once there was chemical - blackened tenements, there are now bright, clean new homes. There is a "Gateway ", with a giant photographic work, depicting " The Gatekeeper". She also hovers above, on an anchor chain
, the UK's only suspended sculpture - a twice-life-size bronze sculpture of a woman, lying horizontally.
Designer Matt Baker and photographer Dan Dubowitz of Heisenberg were behind the artworks. The Gatekeeper symbolises the notion of Gorbals as a gateway for Irish, Jewish and Asian immigrant communities over the centuries. Beneath the whole structure lies a crypt containing burned remains of objects donated by members of the Gorbals community.
The artworks, unveiled in 2002, were commissioned by the Crown Street Regeneration Project as part of a programme of rebuilding in the area and improving its image.
They are getting there !!!
