Scotland Street Tunnel

I only found out the purpose of this closed tunnel at the foot of Scotland Street a few years ago and was astonished to learn it took a railway up the hill, under St Andrew's Square to a platform in Waverley Station, 90 degrees to the current platforms - on the Borders railway platform you can see a tunnel to it.

Although I knew all that, looking the details up tonight revealed other "interesting facts" ... the tunnel took passengers from Waverley to the river Forth for a ferry crossing over to Dundee.... and... at the Waverley end it was at Canal Street... the old name for Princes Street. Who'd'a'thunkit... I probably should have known that fact but no, I did not register.

So you can read more here and other places.
