And my new-to-me copy of Karate-do Kyohan, by Master Gichin Funakoshi arrived today!! So complicated and deep; just discussing the meaning of the change in character for 'kara' in the word karate: from one meaning (basically) Chinese, to one meaning (simplistically) empty, he wrote (after two other points, also very deep): "Finally, in a fundamental way, the form of the universe is emptiness (kara), and thus, emptiness is form itself.
