What does a computer virus look like?

Something odd shaped and covered in spots? I spent most of the day uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee because it kept freezing when carrying out a full scan and I was convinced my laptop had a virus, Well after a lot of Googling it turns out that its an issue with McAfee itself. Hey guys is there a solution out there?
