Alastair Dunn - Champion Nutter
This is Alastair Dunn, this year's (today's) winner of the British Championship Hill Race at Alva Games. In fact he's won it every year since 2006 and before that.. 11 years running according to someone I spoke to.
This is no ordinary race - it's 1300ft of steep ascent in 0.8 miles and straight back down again. One runner passed me with blood streaming down his face. Some experienced racers wear gardening gloves to protect their hands from the gorse bushes lining the "path".
"Alastair the unbeatable" was a bit slow this year at 21 mins 24 seconds - he can normally get nearer 20 minutes, but he was 37 seconds in front! It was quite muddy this year which was probably slowing them down a bit.
The record was set by Kenny Stuart in 1981 at 18 minutes 39 seconds!! I think he must have taken a suicidally direct line down the hill to achieve that, but he could seemingly beat all-comers running up very steep slopes as well. It's a record that may never be broken. Last year I saw a runner miss the path and run over a 15ft cliff on the way down, roll over as he landed and get up and continue running down the hill..pure mental.
