Kansas River
We drove to Lecompton to try and get a shot of the river today. It was raining this morning and has been sun then cloud all day. Lecompton was the Territorial capital of Kansas before Kansas became a state in 1854. It is also claimed as the place where the Revolution started over slavery. Known as Bleeding Kansas during this time of struggle between the proslavery faction, largely wealthier people wanting to come in and settle from Missouri, bringing their slaves with them, and Kansans who did not want them coming buying up the land. In the end the Free Staters won. John Brown was also very active in all this and gradually worked his way across the country, ending at Harper's Ferry where the Civil War really took off.
This shot of the river at Lecompton was taken near one of the places where you can put a canoe in. The river is low at present but after a good rain it will easily cover the sand banks and reach the level you can see on the right.
Forgot to say that this is my 500th blip. I am so glad I found Blipfoto. I have "met" so many good and kind people.
